Another post from the original Assorted Nonsense, which I’m reposting because it’s rather pertinent to this time of year… don’t take these times for granted, though, they change all the time… best to phone the rinks involved and confirm. And if you hear of any changes, lemme know and I’ll change them here:
All info updated Dec 24, 2007
Sorry about the specific geographical nature of this post. But this has been a source of aggravation for some time. We like to go skating as a family, but we’re always hard pressed to find skating times at the various local public arenas. I finally found out a bunch of public and family skating times today; I’m going to post them here for future reference, and also so that anyone else who might be looking for such times online might have access to them:

Do you know any outdoor rinks in Durham?
February 17th, 2008 at 3:20 pm
you know, Joe. I think we need to start a movement here. We drive into the city for outdoor skating…. What is that about? We had a terrific time at Nathan Phillips square the other day and are going to head in to Scarborough civic for an outdoor skate. I just don’t have any appetitie for circling inside an arena for an hour.
How do we get some outdoor rinks going in Whitby? Behind Schools? The old hospital grounds? We actually have an outdoor rink near us in peel park and it’s completely snowed under and only used for street hockey in the summer!

I say we close off a certain crescent, flood it, rent a Zamboni, and we’ll be good to go. Either that or we each offer up our front lawns.
Except that you were serious, weren’t you?
There’s got to be a flat park somewhere. If somebody were to donate some land a small volunteer group could maintain it, with a small contribution from the City of Whitby.

I agree..even if it is almost a year later. Durham region boasts we have some of the best hockey talent in the world coming from here, yet have no outdoor rinks whatsoever? Is the economy that bad that frozen water is now at a premium? A little chunk of flat land is unavailable? Come on now…

YES! We need an outdoor rink in Durham Region. There must be some land around the Whitby Civic Recreation Centre that could be used! Peel Park also sounds like a good place to start. Let’s start a petition!

Aside from the outdoor skating rink at Scarborough Civic Centre, the other closest rink to where I live (I’m from Whitby), is the one on Reesor Rd, just north of Steeles Ave (between Steeles and 14th Ave). It’s called “CEDARENA.” I believe it just opened in the past week.
Here is a link to this site, which the town of Markham apparently have several outdoor rinks.

Hope this was a bit helpful.

“CEDARENA” has been around for many years, but I think it’s been closed all winter, and it just opened this past week. That’s what I meant to say earlier. I know this doesn’t help much, because Markham is NOT in Durham. But not everybody knows about the outdoor rinks in Markham. Just thought I’d pass on this information.

I Definitely agree we need an outdoor rink in Durham region. Going to Nathan Phillips square down town is always a balst..But only when your there. The driving there and back sucks, parking sucks, and its always soo busy everywhere. It would be nice to have an afternoon outdoors skating publicly where you dont have to drive an hour out of the way, or take the train to get to. I will sign a petition for a rink around here for sure!

Dear Mayor,
What a wonderful place Whitby is to live. Really is the heart of Durham Region isn’t it? Half way between Pickering and Clarington. There must be a million folks always looking for outdoor activities in the winter.
I remember growing up as a child in Scarborough. There was always so much to do. Ill never forget the outdoor rink behind every public school across the city. It seems like those days are well behind us.
Lets do a simple search of the NET to find an outdoor GTA rink. Wow, the closest outdoor rink is the Scarbourough Civic Center. Scarbourough, woh in Durham wants to go back to Scarborough? I dont even want to spend my hard earned dollars at the Scarborough Town Center.
Imagine one outdoor Durham rink for all to attend. They would come for miles to skate outdoors. Promoting our dear city for all to see. Generating needed tourist dollars for Whitby. Not only that, we would have something to call our own. We would have something to be proud of and for our children. The way I see it, Whitby is a place for our children to fondly recall memories of their childhood. We take pride on being a city for our families and children.
I think the time has come for our own outdoor skating rink. What is one skating rink for a region as large as Durham with so much land. We must have a parcel to begin building our dreams.
I am sure many volunteers would assist in keeping such a skating extravaganza for our children.
I live directly behind our new Durham Regional offices on Rossland at Garden. I would go as far to say that if you provide the water, ill get out there myself and create a small skating rink for the folks in my neighbourhood. We did it in the old days, and there was nothing wrong with that.
Lets do our City proud and consider this. I look foward to your response.

I know I’m reviving an old topic here folks, but there is one small thing you are all missing – insurance! Many of the outdoor rinks we skated on in the city in the Seventies (and earlier I would assume) are now closed due to the legalities and insurance. Sucks to live in our time, but that’s the deal.
Tim mentions an unused outdoor rink in Peel Park. Unfortunately he has it wrong. That is a lacrosse box and is used very heavily during the summer. That said, there is no logistical reason other than insurance!

If the regions and cities can man a indoor rink and have the proper insurance, it can also do the same for an outdoor rink. The city of Toronto does have all their insurances in order. The next issue would be grooming, which the city would want to maintain to assure less possibility of injuries. That being said there are tow behind ice groomers that can be attached to a pick up truck or tractor. I think what needs to happen is some sort of petiton taken to the region, the cities/towns would save money on daytime hydro, glycols and outdoor rink maintenance is much easier.I live in Oshawa and would love to take my kids to an outdoor rink.

On the topic of outdoor rinks…. The Whitby fire department has in the past had a rink in front of the fire station on Taunton rd. just east of brock The somewhat sunken rectangle is quite apparent in the summertime, although I am
not sure why they no longer carry on this age old family pass time, but does anyone know any
firemen or politicians they can ask?
