I’m in Vancouver for three days, business trip. Ate at an Italian restaurant tonight where the special was Atlantic lobster. I thought, it’s my first trip to the Pacific, I’m not going to eat food from the Atlantic.
But then I wound up ordering Halibut, which was probably from the Atlantic.
It was horrible actually. What a disappointment. Slightly overcooked and just not an inspired dish, I’m afraid.
Fortunately the dessert of Strawberry Mousse almost made up for it.

First time I ever tried a shark steak was in Vancouver and I loved it. I assume it would have come from the Pacific. Of course, there’s always the Alaskan King Crab. But I’m thinking that for the authentic left coast experience, you might want to go for the “Tofobster”.
I wouldn’t recommend the salmon mousse…

For the Japanese trade the East Coasters tried to fly lobster to Japan where they pay more money. Didn’t work, lobsters died on route.
Solution: fly them (mildly drugged) the 7hours to Vancouver, wake them up, give them a rest in Vancouver, then back to hibernation for the Trans-Pacific leg.
Result: Lobsters arrive in Japan alive and expensive. Vancouver gets leftovers alive.
Halibut is west coast. One place is doing Haddock (east) and Halibut (west). Most halibut is from north of Queen Charlotte island caught on long lines.
There are so many “italian” restos? Which one? Salmon or trout would be better, or oysters if you must have seafood.

Interesting… I actually prefer salmon but I eat a fair amount of it so I thought I’d try something different. That’ll learn me.
Every time my girls see a live lobster in a grocery store they try to save it. They encourage me to buy it and set it free.
Can’t remember which restaurant it was… a few blocks from the CBC. Across the street from some condos that were converted warehouses… you could still see all the ductwork.
Mike: The only time I’ve ever enjoyed tofu was a tofu Christmas dinner some friends made me once in France. Best. Christmas Dinner. Ever.
